The (Carassius auratus) is a popular variety of fancy goldfish best known for its spherical, "golf ball" body and distinctive raised, bead-like scales that resemble pearls. Originating from China, these fish are often referred to as "Ping Pong" goldfish due to their comical round shape
- Unique Scales: Their name comes from hard, white, calcium carbonate deposits in the center of each scale, giving them a domed, pearly texture.
- Body Shape: They have an extreme, egg-like body that can grow up to 4–8 inches long in ideal conditions.
- Swimming Style: Due to their heavy, round bodies and small fins, they are slow and somewhat clumsy swimmers.
Because of their specialized anatomy, Pearlscales require more attentive care than standard goldfish:
- Tank Setup: A minimum of 20–30 gallons is recommended for a single fish to maintain water quality.
- Safe Decor: Their raised scales are delicate; the aquarium should be free of sharp objects or rough rocks that could knock them off. Lost "pearl" scales grow back as regular, flat scales.
- Water Conditions: They prefer cooler water between 18°C and 24°C (65–75°F) with a stable pH of 6.5 to 7.5.
- Feeding: They are prone to swim bladder issues and constipation. It is critical to pre-soak dry food (flakes or pellets) so it doesn't expand in their gut, or use sinking pellets.
Tank Mates: Only house them with other slow-moving fancy varieties like Fantails, Black Moors, or Ryukins. Avoid fast swimmers (like Comets or Commons) that will outcompete them for food
